First, you will create a setting with living or inert stones. About two weeks later, when the surface sediments of the stones will have set down and you will have them drained, a layer of sand could possibly be added, unless you are choosing a setting in bare tank bottom.
We recommend two options for the sand layer: either a thin layer of 3cm (1.2 inch) or the creation of a Deep Sand Bed of 12 to 15cm (4.7 to 5.9 inches) with layers of different particles sizes sands.
The thin option gives a good aesthetic effect and a more diversified micro fauna, as it would help to micro-implantation, copepods, and various micro burrowing.
The thick one will act as a biological filter, purifying nitrates with aerobic and anaerobic bacteria it houses. It goes without saying that this deep sand bed is also a very fertile ground for a big micro fauna settlement.
About rocks, you can either use living stones colonized from tropical seas or to buy inert rocks like Aquaroche which bacterial artificial supports, made in ceramics and whose design been thoroughly studied to provide maximum porosity and therefore an ideal ground for the nitrogen cycle bacteria and micro-fauna.
We regularly receive messages indicating that bought living stones seem empty with micro fauna. Is it really surprising when the time spent in immersion is more and more restricted in production countries because production requirements and more micro fauna often suffers severely transport to import.
Criticizes on the living stones includes they are contaminated with pests to animals that we'd like to host: Eunice, mantis shrimps, crabs, Aiptasia, majano ...
These stones, as well as inert stones which need to be settled, will take a fresh start if we provide them various bacteria strains and micro fauna. Micro fauna is a very important upholding in the biodegradation of waste aquarium.
Why cut out and deprive the aquarium when you could achieve a balanced and sustainable tank?
An Incredible microscopic wealth is within reach for any aquarium: copepods, isopods, amphipods, freshwater prawns, mysid shrimp, red worms, white, spaghetti worms; all these types of burrowing and benthic organisms involved in waste management in the reef aquarium. This virtually invisible world is most effective because it goes everywhere to eat the trash.
Invisible to the naked eye, the bacteria in the nitrogen cycle is essential to starting and keeping balance in a sustainable ecosystem, which can be either reef or fish-only. You should favor strains of living sea water bacteria : Nitrosomonas (ammonia eaters) and Nitrospira (nitrites eaters).
The aquarist should be able to rely on quality and a rich colonizer bacteria to maintain a healthy tank over the long term and thus having a strong base to prevent bacterial biological incident (death of an animal in the aquarium, failure of the skimmer ...).
With Phytoplankton you feed the zooplankton and filter feeders, then zooplankton feeds the micro fauna and corals. You settle a real complete food chain in your aquarium, beneficial to all organisms. Doing so, recreate the marine ecosystem, in all its complexity, and that is how the aquarium will have a solid foundation through time without incident.
Too many aquarists overlook the invisible to invest only in the "higher" animals, coral and fish, therefore building a fragil aquarium where are present only the highest levels of the pyramid without base the to support it. Nursing the starting of the aquarium and taking care of the lower levels of the food chain ("bacteria and micro fauna) is a way to ensure a strong aquarium that will not fall to the first problem.
Note: It is much easier and less troublesome to pay a small bottle of diversifeid Microfauna than adding a living rock which could not be filled with micro-life.
We advise you to add micro fauna twice a year to prevent its loss.
